The Old Shop in Stutton was built in 1746 and was later added to in Victorian times. Formerly the Post Office and shop for the village, the house has lots of history and retains it's position at the centre of the village with a working post box in the wall of the house.
The owners, Sarah, Paul and their family live in the main house, of which the two holiday lets are part, but they are independent, each with private access.
Suffolk is a county of outstanding natural beauty, and is famous for John Constable's paintings of the local area. There are plenty of local attractions and places of interest to see and visit and just over the border, into Essex, is the historic town of Colchester with it's castle. Ipswich is only a 10 minute drive for shopping or an amble along the quayside visiting the restaurants and bars while watching the yachts.
Choose to walk from the house in either direction... take the lane opposite and you will find yourself with stunning views over Alton Reservoir. Bring your own or hire some bikes and use the cycle tracks, hire a boat or canoe from the sailing club, fish or take a walk around the water's edge - the full circuit for the fit amongst you. A tranquil walk in the opposite direction will take you to the shores of the River Stour.
If you fancy a trip to the seaside, there are a number of resorts to choose from: Felixstowe, Clacton-on-Sea, Southwold, Aldeburgh and many more.
However, if all you want to do is relax, then why not book our upstairs accommodation and enjoy the sun deck in summer with a chilled drink or while away some time in any of the local village pubs, in winter around the roaring fire or in the pub garden in summer. The nearest pub is The King's Head - serves food and real ales. There are a number of events, including live music, throughout the year, so why not check out their upcoming events. There is also The Compasses Inn in Holbrook which also serves food and real ales. The White Horse at Tattingstone is a nice stopping point if you fancy a walk around the reservoir. There is also the Red Lion in Chelmondiston which is a bistro restaurant.
Close to Harwich, we are also perfectly placed for an overnight stop before taking the ferry to Holland.
Whatever you are looking for from your holiday or visit, The Old Shop has plenty to offer.
Local amenities include 2 local pubs serving food and a local community shop for basic provisions.
Be sure to check out our Photo gallery of the house and its surroundings.
